Tanto per fare della meta-autoreferenzialità, ho scoperto dell’esistenza della Cockactrice leggendo… Things as They Are or the Adventures of Caleb Williams.
La citazione è naturalmente biblica. In Italiano lo traduciamo con basilisco.
Cockatrice
COCKATRICE. One of the names by which the Basilisk was known. ‘Many opinions,’ says Dr. Thomas Browne, in his Pseudodoxia Epidemica, ‘ are passant concerning the basilisk, or little king of serpents, commonly called the Cockatrice: some affirming, others denying, most doubting, the relations made hereof.***That such an animal there is, if we evade not the testimony of Scripture and human writers, we cannot safely deny.’ This is very true, and it is equally true that the alleged generaiion of the basilisk, or cockatrice, and the powers attributed to it in antient times, were the most ridiculous fables.
Così la definizione data dalla Penny Cyclopaedia pubblicata dalla Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge (non per nulla siamo in pieno Ottocento, non per nulla sembra un nome uscito dalla penna di Dickens – o a questo punto, era Dickens a ricamare su certi nomi che già esistevano).
